A legacy of courage, service and perseverance took center stage Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, as Lamar CISD officially dedicated Antonio "Tony" Becerra Elementary School, honoring a World War II veteran, civic leader, and lifelong advocate. Becerra Elementary opened this August as part of Lamar CISD's continued growth, providing a new learning environment where students can build their bright futures while exemplifying the values of the man whose name the school proudly bears.
Born in Needville, Texas, in 1925, Mr. Becerra served in the United States Army during World War II. While serving in Europe, he was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and held as a prisoner of war for five months before escaping in 1945. His courage and service earned him the Bronze Star.
Following the war, Becerra continued his commitment to serving others. As a leader in the American G.I. Forum and a member of the Rosenberg City Council, he advocated for equality, supported veterans, and worked to expand opportunities throughout his community. A successful local businessman and devoted father of 14, he also championed education, scholarships, and programs supporting families in need.
The dedication celebration began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony outside the school, followed by a program featuring student performances and remarks from Becerra's family members, campus leadership, Board of Trustees President Jacci Hotzel, and Superintendent Dr. Roosevelt Nivens. "Mr. Becerra's life reminds us that greatness isn't just about what we accomplish for ourselves, but what we do to make life better for others," Dr. Nivens said. "That's what I want every child who walks through these doors to understand. We want our students to dream big, work hard and believe in themselves, but we also want them to be good people who care for others and give back to their communities. If we can instill those values in our children, we're not just building a great school. We're building a better future."
