Lamar Consolidated High School junior Nicolle Walters is no rocket scientist. But she could be on her way.

Walters is one of a few students in the nation chosen by NASA to participate in their Aerospace Scholars Program. Walters will take part in an online learning experience with NASA engineers during the spring and this summer will spend an all-expenses-paid week working with aerospace engineers at the Johnson Space Center.

High School Aerospace Scholars is an interactive, online learning experience highlighted by a six-day residential summer experience at the NASA Johnson Space Center.

Participants explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematic concepts with engineers and scientists. The program is sponsored by NASA and funded by the State of Texas, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ and Rotary NASA, at no cost to participants.

During the spring, Walters will:

• Take part in space exploration studies on lunar exploration, Space Shuttle, Space Station and Mars exploration;

• Have access to links for virtual reality models, interactive tutorials, videos and 3-D graphics; and

• Have e-mail and online conversations with NASA engineers/scientists.

During her six-day residential summer experience at JSC, she will:

• Take part in briefings by NASA engineers and scientists;

• Do team projects directed by NASA engineers/scientists;

• Participate in hands-on engineering activities; and

• Tour of JSC facilities.

 She will also be mentored by NASA engineers and scientists offering guidance in possible science, technology, engineering and mathematics career fields.

 Walters is part of Lamar Consolidated High School’s Project Lead the Way program, which provides middle and high schools with engaging, hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math courses that prepare students to be innovative and productive leaders in those fields.
