July is here and you know what that means...school is just around the corner. In this month's update, Lamar CISD Superintendent Dr. Roosevelt Nivens shares the latest news from across the district, including free summer meals, the 2025-2026 student transportation form, and the upcoming Back-to-School Block Party.
Board Updates
Region 4 Superintendent of the Year
Superintendent Dr. Roosevelt Nivens was honored as the 2025 Region 4 Superintendent of the Year. This surprise announcement took place during the June Board Meeting. Dr. Nivens will now represent Region 4 as the nominee for Texas Superintendent of the Year. The Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) is set to announce the winner on September 12 at txEDCON25 in San Antonio, Texas.
In addition to Trustee Zach Lambert's reelection to serve an additional four-year term, Lamar CISD has welcomed three new members to the Board of Trustees, who were sworn into office during the May Board Meeting. These leaders come from diverse backgrounds and bring their experience in education, business, and community service. The meeting also brought a change in leadership. Jacci Hotzel was named President, Jon Welch was named Vice President, and Suzanne Box was named Secretary.
Monica Henderson
District 2
Board Member Since 2025
Current term expires in 2029
Monica Henderson is a longtime Fort Bend County resident and a proud mother of two daughters attending Lamar CISD schools. Her mother was an elementary school teacher, inspiring her to become a teacher and, from early in her career, to dream of combining her political science degree with her passion for education by serving as a school board trustee.
She graduated from Texas A&M University and began her career as a classroom teacher at Fort Bend ISD. She currently serves as a government teacher with Texas Online Preparatory School, a full-time online public school serving grades 3-12.
"I am committed to leaving a legacy that reflects a deep dedication to education and a strong sense of pride in our community. With 23 years in public education, I’m eager to share the knowledge and perspective I’ve gained to help guide the district forward. I want the board to think boldly and pursue innovative opportunities that will set Lamar CISD apart."
Vanessa Marsters
District 3
Board Member Since 2025
Current term expires in 2029
Vanessa Marsters grew up in Sugar Land, Texas and graduated from Clements High School, where she played volleyball for the Lady Rangers. She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Houston and has more than 20 years of experience working in operations and compliance, focusing on fiscal discipline and communication.
She is the proud mother of two children who attend Lamar CISD schools, and believes that strong public schools strengthen the entire community. She loves cheering for the Texans, Astros, Dynamo, Dash, and our own Lamar CISD teams.
"After more than a decade of volunteering in the community and serving on several district committees, including the Strategic Planning Committee that crafted our new five‑year roadmap, I felt called to help turn that vision into reality. Serving on the board gives me the platform to safeguard strong budgeting, support the hiring and retention of exceptional teachers and staff, and keep every decision centered on student success as we confidently guide the district into its next chapter."
George Arroyos
District 6
Board Member Since 2025
Current term expires in 2029
George Arroyos grew up in Hereford, Texas and graduated from Hereford High School. He then earned his bachelor's degree from Angelo State University and a master's degree from the University of Houston-Victoria.
As a resident of Fort Bend County, George has served his community for more than two decades. He currently holds the position of Chairman of the Fort Bend County Library System Advisory Board and volunteers with the Lamar CISD Common Threads program and the 4-H Youth Leadership program. He works full-time in speech communication at the Richmond campus of Wharton County Junior College.
"I enthusiastically look forward to providing a voice in support of the students, parents, and staff during this hyper-growth period in our district, which holds immense opportunity and hope for the future. I am committed to preserving and enhancing the high quality of education at Lamar CISD while maintaining a balance of sound fiscal policy in the use of taxpayer dollars."
Teachers to See Additional 2025-2026 Pay Increases Following HB 2 Passage
Lamar CISD will combine local funds with the new state funding to increase salaries for all district teachers for the 2025-2026 school year. House Bill 2, signed into law on June 20 by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, included funding for a teacher retention allotment designed to support Texas public schools in attracting and retaining highly qualified classroom educators, with special emphasis given to increasing the salaries of experienced teachers.
During the regular monthly meeting on June 17, the Lamar CISD Board of Trustees recognized the following students:
2025 MathCON Finalists
George Ranch HS
Sofia Cuellar
Ethan Davis
Conner George
Anderson "Trey" Whitten
Randle HS
Amiyah Adams
Terry HS
Olyvia Villarreal
At the same meeting, Sadie Folloder from Roberts Middle School had the opportunity to recite the pledge. Sadie is a competitive dancer. Her love for dancing started when she was 18 months old. She loves animals and has two bunnies and three dogs.

As we continue planning for the future of Lamar CISD, the Board of Trustees is considering a bond election for November 2025 to address our district's rapid growth, facility needs, student technology access, and athletic infrastructure.
We've created a survey to gather your feedback to ensure our decisions reflect the priorities of our families, staff, and community members. The survey closes on Friday, July 18.
The proposed bond package may include four separate propositions:
New schools and campus improvements
Technology upgrades for staff and district operations
A 1:1 student device initiative for grades 3–12
Traylor Stadium improvements
Your input is essential and will help guide the next steps of Lamar CISD. Make sure to check your email for the survey link.
If you have questions or have not received the survey link, email Info@LCISD.org.
