LCISD Reads - Summer Reading Challenge

LCISD Reads

This summer LCISD Library Services is hosting a summer reading program at all of our elementary campuses. We want to encourage our students to continue to read and experience new adventures this summer!

To support reading at home, we've developed an engaging digital program through Beanstack – our online reading tracker app available through Classlink.  Through this reading program, students are encouraged to earn entries for prizes by reading every day and completing fun, weekly activities. Prizes include books, gift cards, and iPads – all thanks to the Lamar Education Awards Foundation and community sponsors! It’s sure to be an exciting weekly journey that students will not want to miss!

We encourage students to check out the THOUSANDS of books available in MackinVia – our online eBook portal available through Classlink.  Many exciting new books are being added to our collection just in time for summer.  It's an exciting time to be a part of the LCISD community!

The STEM gender gap is large, with women comprising only 12% of U.S. Computer Science undergraduates (www.code.org). We would like to help close that gap. This summer, the Connect team will partner with Code Ninjas to offer two, 5-day summer coding camp sessions for female students entering 6th, 7th, or 8th grade in the 2022-2023 school year.  The female perspective in the tech space is vital. Girls Who Code Camp creates an environment where questions, discovery and even failure are treated as positive parts of the learning process. Girls Who Code Camp offers hands-on experiences with challenging and innovative concepts. Students learn problem solving and analytical skills while fostering an interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) related careers plus work in teams to use programming languages to build games, web pages and robots.  Registration is on a first come, first served basis and is required for this no-cost opportunity. Transportation to and from camp is not available. Nutritious snacks and water will be provided. LCISD students entering 6th, 7th, or 8th grade in the 2022-2023 school year are eligible to register for this no-cost summer camp.
