Texas Legislators recently passed Senate Bill (SB) 1697, which allows parents/guardians to choose if they want their student to repeat a grade or retake a high school course during the 2021-2022 school year.
This legislation recently went into effect and grants parents or guardians the right to choose for their student to:
- Repeat pre-kindergarten;
- Enroll in pre-kindergarten if the child was eligible to enroll for pre-kindergarten in the previous school year and has not yet enrolled in kindergarten;
- Repeat kindergarten;
- Enroll in kindergarten if the child would have enrolled in kindergarten in the previous year and has not yet enrolled in first grade; and
- For grades 1-3, repeat the grade the student was enrolled in the previous school year.
For the 2021-2022 school year only, parents or guardians also have the right to opt for the following for their student: - For grades 4-8, repeat the grade the student was enrolled in during the 2020-2021 school year; and
- For courses taken for high school credit, repeat any course in which the student was enrolled during the 2020-2021 school year.
Parents who would like to take advantage of these options are required to notify their student’s campus in writing by August. 18, 2021. The campus will then coordinate with parents to discuss next steps.
