Former Student Completes Course

Just received news from EMT teacher at WCJC on a former student of Terry Lindsey's.  This past year LCHS had a student named Mary Methany who signed up to take the EMT basic course and completed the first 'basic' course. She did not take the certification exam at that time but has gone back to WCJC since. She took and passed the basic certification on the first try (quite an accomplishment) and is working on the 2nd course (intermediate level) and wants to take the exam for this level in January 2009.

Lamar Consolidated High School seniors, Yvonne Contreras and Myrna Vaquero participated in the Skills USA Leadership Academy that was held at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Corpus Christi this past week. Yvonne will represent District 9 as treasurer and Myrna Vaquero is the District 9 vice president.

The students along with 140 other district officers from the around the state were greeted by nationally renowned body language expert, Jan Hargrave. Other sessions included paraliamentary procedure, public speaking, etiquette, presenting yourself, team building, professional writing, communication, and a "life auction."

Myrna and Yvonne received the Skills USA statesman award which is given to Skills USA leaders who have accomplished specific criteria. On Wednesday evening Skills USA students enjoyed an evening at the Texas State Aquarium. They had a behind the scenes event.

For their efforts and participation - leadership, citizenship and patriotism, Myrna and Yvonne have been invited to attend the Washington Leadsership Training Institute in Virginia (Sept. 20 - 24) which is sponsored by State Farm Insurance and Caterpillar and is approved by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. This is the first time that this invitation has been extended to Lamar CISD students. (This is a HUGE honor!!)

Foster High Career and Technical Education teachers Sheri Yearby and Gina Blake recently participated in the weeklong Houston A+ Challenge's externship program.

Externships connect classroom teachers with business professionals in their fields of study, in order to make students learning more relevant to the 21st century workplace. Teachers use their firsthand experiences from the week to develop job-related lesson plans to share with students.

Yearby, who teaches Culinary Arts at Foster, did her externship at the Conrad Hilton Hotel on the University of Houston campus. Gina Blake, who teaches marketing, worked at NASA.

The Teacher Externship Program was started in 2003 by the Greater Houston Partnership and Houston A+ Challenge as part of an initiative to create a system of high schools in the metropolitan area that assure students a seamless transition into higher education and the workforce.

This is a nonprofit group and major donors include The Annenberg Foundation, The Brown Foundation, Houston Endowment, the Carnegie Corporation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
