Counselor's Corner

My name is Beth Yockey and I am excited to be one of the school counselors at Polly Ryon Middle School.  I was previously at Velasquez Elementary where I was also a 3rd and 4th grade teacher. I graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a Master’s degree in Education in School Counseling.  I am blessed to have three sons of my own and a loving husband who supports my dream career.

My name is Melissa Winn and I love being a school counselor at Polly Ryon Middle School.  I was previously in Fort Bend ISD and have taught 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 8th grades, along with special education.  I graduated from Angelo State University with a Master’s of Education in Guidance and Counseling.  My BA in Psychology was obtained from the University of Texas at Arlington.  My husband and I also have three sons that keep us busy!

Our job at Polly Ryon is to make sure that all of our students are academically and socially successful not only here at school but also in their personal home life. We work with students, teachers, administrators and parents to create a positive school experience and ensure our students are striving to be their best selves every day. We truly believe that being a school counselor is the best job on earth and love every minute of it.

Polly Ryon is a proud participant of No Place for Hate® and continues to be for the 2019-2020 school year.

The No Place for Hate® initiative provides educators and students with the resources to ensure that anti-bias and diversity education are an integral part of the school curriculum. No Place for Hate® also helps to create and sustain inclusive school environments where all students feel valued and have the opportunity to succeed by promoting respect for individual difference while challenging bigotry and prejudice. Launched in schools in 2001, the popular initiative has been embraced by hundreds of campuses throughout the Southwest region, including many in the Houston, Austin/Central Texas and El Paso areas.

Pillars_Six_Pillars_of_Character-300x160
CHARACTER COUNTS! was created in 1992 with a coalition of 17 nationally prominent youth serving and educational organizations. Today there are hundreds of member organizations and CC! serves millions of children and their families every year. It is, by a very large margin, the largest character development organization in the world. The program, initially focused exclusively on the development of core ethical traits – trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship (the Six Pillars of Character) –  has continually evolved reflecting current research and best practices to become a comprehensive student development program embracing academic, social and emotional skills and traits as well as the Six Pillars.
