On Wednesday, April 26, the Lamar Educational Awards Foundation (L.E.A.F.) hosted its annual Superintendent for the Day event.

Julio Mendoza is a 2nd grade student from Ray Elementary School and won the raffle prize this year. Before spending his day as Superintendent, “Dr. Mendoza” issued an Executive Order Memorandum to all District campuses and offices declaring his day in the office as a Dress to Impress Day.

"Dr. Mendoza" came to work decked out in a suit, bow tie and fresh haircut. He spent the day shadowing Superintendent Dr. Roosevelt Nivens, visiting campuses and working with various departments to understand many of the job duties and responsibilities performed by the head of the District.

His schedule for the day included:

  • Police car ride-in with the District’s K9 Jumbo and Officer Edge

  • Touring Brazos Crossing Building with District Administration

  • Selecting a math activity for his class with the Teaching & Learning Department

  • Learning about writing checks with the Finance Department

  • Creating a teacher recognition certificate with the Human Resources Department

  • Touring the Transportation Facilities

  • Recording a video shoot with Communications Department

  • Performing a food quality check with the Child Nutrition Department

  • Playing golf with the Athletics Department and team

It was a day filled with decisions, learning, and fun for the 8-year-old. At the conclusion of the event, he wanted to make sure that all staff knew that they should be proud and that they were doing a great job.

What a great Superintendent!
