Lamar CISD to Collect Change During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Sep 07, 2018 | Community Relations

At its August meeting, the Board of Trustees approved a resolution declaring September 2018 as “Childhood Cancer Awareness Month” in Lamar CISD. The objective of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is to put a spotlight on the types of cancer that largely affect children, survivorship issues and help raise funds for research and family support.

This year, the District is also leading the “Make a Change” campaign during September to raise funds to benefit local nonprofit, Tackles4Cancer.

The “Make a Change” campaign will run from Sept. 10-28. Students, staff, parents and community members who would like to participate can donate their spare change using the designated jars located in all LCISD classrooms and the administration building to help tackle transportation for cancer patients.

The National Cancer Institute reports that 20 percent of cancer patients will cancel or delay treatment due to lack of transportation resources. Founded by former NFL player Dominic Austin shortly after his cancer diagnosis, Tackles4Cancer aims to improve the quality of life for cancer patients by providing transportation services. They organize fundraisers and community-building events to support that mission.
