LCISD College Visit Policy

Students classified in the 11thand 12thgrades are eligible for up to two (2) days related to a college or university visit in a school year. Unused days do not roll over from junior year to senior year.

At least two school days before your visit: complete the College Visit Request Form (this can be found in Mrs. Nowak’s office Room 1136) and have parent signatures. The form will also require students to request each teacher to sign off that they are passing their classes.

The form must be approved by your Principal (Mr. Kipping) and College Facilitator/Counselor (Mrs. Nowak) two days in advance. There are no exceptions.

Once the form has been completed and approved, you will turn the form in to the attendance office.

After the visit, students must bring back an official letter from the college that they attended (on the college letterhead) as proof of visit. This documentation must be turned into the attendance office no later than two school days after your college visit. Only with this documentation will your college visit be exempted.

TSTC National Signing Day

We want to congratulate your students for applying to TSTC during National Signing Day.

You are invited to join us for our National Signing Day event on Thursday, April 20th at 10:00 am. Students and individuals interested in attending can RSVP here.

Similar to athletic signings, applicants will ink their intentions to complete a technical program at TSTC. We want to honor those entering a technical field, emphasizing our commitment to help them gain the skills necessary for a great-paying job.

Thank you for your continued support of TSTC, and we look forward to seeing you on April 20th.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

Replies to this email will be posted as a reply to the announcement, which will be seen by everyone in the course.

Spring Service Cord Deadline

Good morning!
Service Code Guidelines
You asked; we listened! We recently met as a committee and made some changes to our Service Cord guidelines. Please see the updated document here: Service Cord Guidelines
All hours completed between September 15th – December 14th must be entered, AND VERIFIED by the supervisor, by December 15th, for approval. Please enter hours by day or week. Any submission that exceeds 40 hours or occurs during the school week without an explanation of the specific time the volunteering occurred will be denied until the dates and times are explained to Mrs. Nowak. Hours should not be retroactively entered (e.g., seniors entering hours from freshman year—this is due to the bookkeeping and verification requirements of the supervisor or supervising agency) and will not be approved.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at jennifer.nowak@lcisd.org with any questions!

Senior Information
Priority Deadlines
Many state and public universities use priority deadlines to encourage early applications. The priority deadline date varies by college and/or university. Students who chose this type of application must have a complete application, all supporting documents, along with their application fees paid- and some of the deadline dates are approaching quickly! Please make sure that if you are planning to go to college that you are aware of the application deadline and understand the different application types (priority, regular, early decision, early actions, etc.)

After Applying
It is very important that after you apply to a college or university that you continuously check the email entered within your application. The majority of colleges and universities will acknowledge the receipt of your application via that email address. Along with the acknowledgment of your application, they will also send you information that will allow you to access your individual student portal. The student portal will allow you to check your admission status and items that are needed to finish your application. This is a very important step in the admissions process as colleges cannot make a decision on your application if it is not completed (including the submission of supporting documents).
If you have submitted your application to an institution but have not taken the time to submit supporting documents, please refer to the Helpful Information (Seniors) page. This has all the information you need for how to get that done.

Letters of Recommendation
It is very important that you speak with the person you are requesting a letter from BEFORE you send the request through SchooLinks. I have asked that you submit your request at least three weeks before the deadline and that you give your recommender at least ten school days to complete the letter, but some recommenders may need more time and will communicate that with you during that initial conversation.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, I am happy to help!

A Note from the College and Career Facilitator:

My name is Jennifer Nowak, and I am the new College at Career Facilitator at Foster High School. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and my role on Foster’s campus. I have a bachelor’s degree in American Sign Language and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Lamar University. I worked at Foster High School for four years as an ASL teacher from 2015-2019 (if you have taken or are taking ASL, you might have seen me in the videos) before I transferred to Fulshear High School and worked there for three years. I am excited to be back at Foster and to protect the nest once again!

In my role, I help students create a plan for post-graduation whether that means college, technical school, the military, or straight to a career. Though I help students’ complete college and financial aid applications, I also get students connected with military recruiters, take the ASVAB, assist students with potential career options, and much more.

Periodically throughout this year, I will be reaching out to share important information with you. This information will be disbursed via announcements from the Counselor’s Corner Canvas page. Parents, please be sure to observe your child in Canvas, so that you ensure that you receive these announcements via email. I do my best to organize my updates to you with subtitles so that you can easily find what is important to you and skip what is not!

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns that you or your student may have. If I don’t know the answer, I will be sure to find it for you and help in any way I can!
