Jump into L.E.A.P.

August 10, 2012

Back-to-school time also means a return to afterschool programs. This year, students at four Lamar CISD elementary schools won’t have to leave school for afterschool.

This is the first year for L.E.A.P., the Lamar Educational Adventure Program. The program will offer a safe and secure environment to students at Austin, Hubenak, McNeill and Thomas elementary schools whose parents can’t pick them up at the 2:40 p.m. dismissal time, or who prefer that their children not go home alone.

L.E.A.P. will be open until 6:30 p.m. on every school day and on staff development days, providing service to students in kindergarten through 5th-grade. The program will be available on those days when the elementary schools dismiss after a half-day of classes. L.E.A.P. will also be open on staff development days and on Fort Bend County Fair Day.

An afternoon with L.E.A.P. will include a snack and time for homework. Students will rotate through structured enrichment activities, focusing on literacy, math, physical education, fine arts, service learning, technology and character education.

The day will end with activities of the students choosing.

“Our goal is to offer an affordable program to parents, in an educational atmosphere they already have come to trust,” said Michelle Piña Amos, the Coordinator for L.E.A.P. “We’ll have quality activities every day in a structured setting.”

“Each campus will have a Site Manager and several Group Leaders directly supervising groups of students,” Amos said. “L.E.A.P. is actively hiring for the part-time positions for the start of the school year.”

All L.E.A.P. campus employees will receive the same background check given to all professional educators in the state of Texas. All campus-based employees will have certifications in CPR and first aid and will receive annual training, including “Capturing Kids Hearts,” which is part of Lamar CISD’s classroom management program.

Enrollment for the first year of L.E.A.P. is ongoing and there are limited spaces available on each of the four campuses. The District is planning to expand to other elementary campuses, add “before-school” time and summer programs, as well.

There are still openings for students at all four campuses. Contact L.E.A.P. at 832-223-0132, or e-mail leap@lcisd.org, for information or to enroll a student. You can also check the L.E.A.P. webpage by clicking here.
