To the Parents of Wessendorff Middle School Students:

Earlier this school year information concerning promotion to the next grade level was sent home in the student agenda, but questions by some students’ demand that we send it again. Students must pass their classes and their TAKS test in order to be promoted to the next grade level. Important to note, if a student fails more than two courses, he/she will be ineligible for summer school. This will result in them repeating the grade.  For those students who do attend summer school, they must pass a summer TAKS test along with passing all the summer school courses in order to advance to the next grade level. Please discuss with your child the grade advancement requirements of the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District for grades 6-8.

Policy EIE (Local) revised July 20, 2006 states that:

In grades 6-8, promotion to the next grade level shall be based on an overall average of 70 on a scale of 100 based upon course-level, grade-level standards (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) for all subject areas and a grade of 70 or above in each of the following four courses: language arts (the average of English and reading), mathematics, science, and social studies. In addition, the student must meet minimum expectations on the reading and mathematics sections on the state-mandated assessment (TAKS).

Please note that these requirements are part of an overall system of support for student academic achievement.  This system includes:

  • Evaluation of student needs and academic support for students who need additional instruction;
  • Ongoing evaluation of student progress during the school year with assistance provided to all students with identified academic weaknesses;
  • Additional instruction after each test administration for students who do not meet the passing standard on a subject-area test;
  • An instructional plan for every student who has not met the passing standard.

The school recognizes and supports the important role parents play in the education of their children.  Your child’s teachers and I depend upon and look forward to working with you to help your child succeed.  I strongly encourage you to discuss this matter with your child’s teachers.  Please contact the school at 832-223-3300 to make an appointment.
