| The
mission statement for Manford Williams Elementary School is to prepare students
socially and academically to become life long learners and responsible productive
citizens in a competitive global society.
Students spend
each day at Williams structured for success! Teaching is truly a team
effort in that teachers work together to provide a positive and success-oriented
atmosphere throughout the school. Students are heterogeneously- or ability-grouped
depending on their needs. A variety of programs addresses specific student
needs: gifted/talented classes, talent pool classes, special education
services, and intensive reading classes. The reading program includes
whole language, phonics, and novel sets. In mathematics, manipulatives
are used with an emphasis on problem-solving strategies.
A twenty-five
station computer lab enhances learning for every grade level. Each classroom
has a computer station while grade five has four per room. The library
has additional stations for student use and has a technology-based management
system. Access to the internet is available in the library and some classrooms.
Closed circuit television provides additional technological resources
for the students. The school's learning resource specialist works closely
with teachers to provide materials for classroom use that assist in achieving
a well rounded instructional program.
Students are
recognized for their accomplishments in the areas of citizenship, academics,
attendance and involvement in school activities. Fifth grade students
are elected by peers for the Student Council who then manage the student
store. A reading program pairs different grade levels to share their love
for reading. Special events involving students include the Science Fair,
Spelling Bee, Author's Tea, and grade level programs.
A very dedicated
and supportive PTO has provided support to students and staff. They also
offer the financial support for instructional materials and activities.
The annual Spring Festival, the PTO's major fund-raising activity, offers
fun for the entire family. The active volunteers also assist in a variety
of ways. Parents also may participate by serving on the Parent Advisory
Committee or the Site Based Decision Making Team.
