HISTORY OF THE NAME OF OUR
SCHOOL
The school name, Deaf
Smith, originated from a famous Texas hero. Deaf Smith was born in New
York and moved to Texas in 1817. He was called Deaf Smith because
he had a hearing problem not because he was deaf. On April 11, 1836,
Mexican military leader Antonio Lopes de Santa Anna and his army crossed
the Brazos River at Richmond and headed to Harrisburg intent on capturing
the Texas Coast and its seaports. His troops and those of Texas
commander Sam Houston met near San Jacinto. In preparation for the upcoming
battle, Houston directed Smith, an army scout, to destroy the Vince's
Bayou Bridge to prevent additional Mexican troops coming to reinforce Santa
Anna and prevent the retreat of Mexicans toward Harrisburg. Houston
and his troops attacked Santa Anna's men during their afternoon
siesta on April 21 to the cries of "Remember the
Alamo" and "Remember Goliad". It was a great victory for Sam Houston and
his Texas army. Smith retired to Richmond, where he died in 1837.
He still has relatives living in the Rosenberg/Richmond area to this
day.
