| Recognized
for its outstanding instructional staff, Long Elementary offers a variety
of programs and activities to motivate young learners and maintain their
enthusiasm throughout the school year. Our focus is mastery of TEKS (Texas
Essential Knowledge and Skills) at each grade level. Differentiated curriculum
meets the needs of each child and maximizes his or her potential. This goal
is achieved through a variety of instructional approaches, including teacher-directed
instruction, silently sustained reading, discovery learning, thematic units,
direct instruction, Open Court phonics, Target the Question math, whole language, cooperative
learning, peer coaching, computer-assisted instruction, and self-concept
development.
Special activities and recognition for students include Super Pal of
the Week, birthday recognition, annual awards, academic recognition,
perfect attendance awards, success notes from the principal, reading programs
like "Book It" and "Read for Success," Accelerated
Reader, and the end-of year Parade of Success. Special activities throughout
the school year also honor Jane Long Texan parents, community tutors and
volunteers.
Long has an active PTO and parent volunteer
program, both of which provide valuable support to teachers, children and the
administration. Throughout the year, parents and community members are invited to
visit classrooms as well as to share special talents and
interests with the children. Call the office if you are interested
in becoming a Texan volunteer or part of the PTO!
