Professional, nurturing,
dedicated, innovative – these are a few of the words that describe the
Lamar
Consolidated
Independent
School
District
. Located in the Richmond-Rosenberg
area, Lamar CISD is only 35 miles southwest of downtown
Houston
and serves a large number of the growing
developments in the western part of
Fort
Bend
County
.
Established in
1947, Lamar has both a proud tradition and a bright future. Lamar CISD
offers superior learning opportunities, excellent teachers, progressive
education practices and state-of-the-art technology in the classroom.
Combine these qualities with the unmistakable advantages of small schools
and a hometown atmosphere, and you have a great place to call
home.
Lamar CISD is known
for academic excellence, award-winning fine arts and superior athletics.
Scores continue to rise and remain at or above average on the state’s
standardized tests (TAKS). LCISD schools are highly rated by the Texas
Education Agency (TEA), with nine Exemplary campuses, 10 hailed as
Recognized and four rated Academically Acceptable. One school was awarded
a U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon – the highest award for any
campus in the
United States
. Another campus earned recognition
as a Distinguished Performance school from the TEA’s No Child Left Behind
Coordination Program. And yet another campus was named to the Texas
Business & Education Coalition’s Honor of Schools with sustained
academic excellence.
Lamar CISD’s growing
student population of more than 21,000 is served by three high schools,
three junior high schools, two middle schools and 18 elementary schools.
Elementary No. 19, McNeill Elementary will open in time for the 2008-2009 school
year, as will Wertheimer Middle School, a sixth-grade only campus, located adjacent
to Briscoe Jr. High School. The District's fourth high school, George
Ranch High, will open in the fall of 2010. The District's fourth
junior high, located next to the new high school, will
open at the same time.
The
district offers a well-balanced elementary curriculum, which includes
computer skills and fine arts with a certified art, music and physical
education teacher on every campus. Unique sixth grade/middle school
campuses focus on the needs of preadolescents and create the easiest
possible transition to secondary schools. Junior high and high schools
provide a curriculum that includes strong academics, advanced placement
courses, career and technology programs, and a full range of
extracurricular activities. Smaller enrollments in Lamar’s secondary
schools give students an enhanced feeling of security and greater
opportunities for success as well as leadership experiences. LCISD’s
gifted and talented program challenges academically oriented students at
every level. A strong Special Education program focuses on supporting
learning in the regular academic program on the child’s home campus with
services ranging from regular classes with adaptations to special classes
with learning objectives adapted to the student’s special needs.
Another attractive
point is Lamar’s conservative approach to finance that keeps homeowners’
school taxes at one of the lowest rates in the Houston area, $1.29765 per
$100 of valuation.
