LEAF honors Donors

The Lamar Educational Awards Foundation recently honored individuals and businesses that made a contribution in 2006 to support LEAF.  The reception, held at The Forum at Lonely Oak, gave donors an opportunity to view twenty-two displays that showcased LEAF grant winners and some of their materials.  “As a donor, I enjoyed the opportunity to visit with teachers and see the items purchased for their classroom,” said Mark Lam of the SHW Group, an architectural firm working on several LCISD projects.  SHW along with PBK Architects, which has designed several LCISD campuses and Brazos Town Center developer NewQuest properties, joined the list of LEAF's Platinum donors, whose which have given $10,000 or more to the foundation.

Grant recipient Ken Fletcher from Briscoe Junior High

spoke to attendees about the difference his LEAF grant

made to his students.  His grant, "Wright Flight: Flying

to the Top of the Mountain:, enables low performing

tudents to set goals for themselves and upon

accomplishing their goals they have the opportunity

to pilot an airplane. "I've seen students make a complete

turnaround in their behavior and grades, improving by

several points after setting their goals," Fletcher said.

" This program is showing students that failure is not

an option."

Over $150,000 in grants was awarded last year to

support new educational opportunities for Lamar CISD

students and teachers. LEAF also awarded

scholarships to three graduating seniors majoring in

the field of education and five scholarships to LCISD

employees working on their teaching certificate. In six

years of existence, LEAF has invested $571,000 into LCISD schools.
