The "fun, fun, fun" of the eighth annual "Surf’s Up, School’s Out" dinner, auction and dance begins May 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds.

This year’s event is presented by OakBend Medical Center and benefits the Lamar Educational Awards Foundation (L.E.A.F.) Money from the event and other L.E.A.F. fundraisers throughout the year are used to underwrite educational grants to Lamar CISD teachers. Over the past eight years, L.E.A.F. grants have totaled hundreds of thousands of dollars.

A chicken-fried steak dinner, catered by Vincek’s, will be served from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., followed by a live dessert auction at 8:15 p.m.

The Triumphs will provide the musical entertainment for the evening, with the dance starting as soon as the dessert auction draws to a close.

"It is fun partying with this bunch," said Triumphs saxophonist and LCHS graduate Ron Petersen. "We always look forward to putting on our Hawaiian shirts and Bermuda shorts to perform at Surf’s Up."

Teresa Gibson, L.E.A.F. secretary and dessert auction chair, said the auction has become quite popular with last year’s 17 desserts bringing in a total of $24,600.

"So far this year, we have 12 of the area’s top chefs donating desserts to be auctioned off," she said.

Vincent Morales, L.E.A.F. board president, said the 2007 Surf’s UP, School’s Out celebration brought out the event’s largest crowd to date, and organizers are hoping to break that record this year.

"It is always so exciting to see so many people having a great time raising funds to benefit our students," he said.

Tickets are $25 and include the dinner, dessert auction and dance. Tickets can be purchased at Camera’s Unlimited, Dostal’s Jewelry, or the LCISD administration building in Rosenberg. A table can be reserved by buying 10 or more tickets.
